New Zealand
Locomotive & Carriage Number Plates and Glasses.
Steam Locos
Ka932 (4-8-4) was built in 1940 at the Woburn Shops, Lower Hutt, Makers number 315. It was first into service in May 1940 and was written off May 1967. I have been told that this Loco pulled the last steam hauled goods out of Napier. There was 35 members of this class of loco built. Photo of Ka 932 shunting at Westmere. Keith Cullen collection.

Diesel locos
Db1000 (A1A-A1A) 705KW (945hp) was built in 1965 at General Motors (EMD), Canada. Makers Number A2073. It was first in service in New Zealand in June 1965 (livery: NZGR Carnation/Midland Red, with White strips). Db1000 was renumbered in 1978 to Db1018 and was written off in February 1989. There were 17 members of this class of loco built. 10 of the class were later on rebuilt to the Dbr class.

Db1001 (A1A-A1A) 705KW (945hp) was built in 1965 at General Motors (EMD), Canada. Makers Number A2074. It was first in service in New Zealand in May 1965 (livery: NZGR Carnation/Midland Red, with White strips). Db1001 was rebuilt to Dbr1213 in 1980 (livery: NZR `Fruit Salad'). There were 17 members of Db class of loco built. 10 of the class were later on rebuilt to the Dbr class.

Dsa223 (0-6-0) was built 1954 at Vulcan Foundry, England. Makers Number 2421/D170. It was first in service in New Zealand in March 1954 (livery: NZGR Carnation/Midland Red). It was renumbered to Dsa280 in 1978 and was written off in December 1985. It is now
preserved at the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) in Auckland. There was 20 of this class of loco built. |
Dsc413 (Bo-Bo) built 1959 at British Thomson-Houston, England. Makers number 1078. It was first put into service in New Zealand in September 1959 (livery: NZGR Carnation/Midland Red). It was renumbered to Dsc2150 in 1978 and written off in February 1989. There were 70 of these locos built, the first 18 by B.T.H England and the other 52 by New Zealand Railway. Tr113 (15ton, 0-4-0) built 1964 at A&G. Price Ltd, Makers number 210. This loco was first in service February 1964 (livery: NZGR Carnation/Midland Red). It was renumbered to Tr465 in 1978 and written off in July 2010. This loco is now owned by myself and is under restoration. There were 9 of this batch of locos built.

Tr176 (20ton, 0-4-0) built 1963 at A&G. Price Ltd, Makers number 205. This loco was first in service March 1963 (livery: NZGR Carnation/Midland Red). It was renumbered to Tr799 in 1978. In September 1984 is was repainted into the Fruit Salad livery and later in the 90's to the Tranz rail Cato Blue. There were 15 of this batch of locos built.

Carriages
A 1123 is a early New Zealand railways A class carriage which was first built in 1904 for the Wellington Manawatu Railway Company as their WMR No 45. It was a 50’0” long, elevated (clerestory) roofed, 2nd class carriage (seated 45 people with Lavatory at one end). It was purchased by NZR with the WMR company take over on 7.12.1908 and reclassified A 1123. It was rebuilt; and reclassified for the ways and works branch to EA 2368 on the 16.9.1950 and finaly written off at Otahuhu shops on the 31.03.1961.

Guards Vans
F523 built December 1926 at Otahuhu Shops, Auckland (50'0", Wood-Panelled Bogie Brake Van, bod: BP X. 4444). It was written off in Auckland May 1978. This was the last van that my grand father worked on before he retired as a guard in Wanganui (hence the date of his retirement on the plate). Photo of sister van F524
