SteamRail Wanganui Inc.
I have been a member of SteamRail Wanganui since the Club was formed in 1989. In the early years of the club, I spent a lot of time with wire brushes and paint helping with the restoration of the Turntable. This took 3 years. Over the years I have worked on most of the SteamRail items. I have been a committee member for many years and now the club President for the past 10 years, and I'm also the Club Editor for its newsletter. I am also grateful to the club for letting me store my loco in the shed with their locos.
SteamRail Wanganui Incorporated was formed some 34 years ago with the main purpose of preserving the Wanganui Turntable and any future Railway memorabilia. Until the late 1980s Wanganui was a large employer of Railway personnel, with the East Town Workshops, Plant Zone at Aramoho, the Railway Station, the Goods Sheds, and the Locomotive Depot all in Taupo Quay, with a Training School in the later years. Many apprentices were put through these facilities along with a large variety of trades.
The group holds its meetings on the 4th Wednesday of every month starting at 7.30pm, at the Wanganui Model Railway & Engineering Society Club Rooms, 70a Alma Rd, Wanganui, where a variety of programs are held.
The group has a Construction/ Maintenance Day every Sunday morning from 9am in the Rail Yards in Taupo Quay Wanganui. At the rail yards SteamRail has two sites. We own the old goods lean-to which we have made into a storage shed/workshop (this is where our locos and carriages etc. are stored) and we also have a site next to the turntable with most of our freight rollingstock stored there.
The club in the past has run excursion trains around the lower Nth Island using KiwiRail rolling stock (I worked as a car steward on these trips). SRW now has running rights in the Wanganui rail yards and they open to the public several times a year offering Motor Trolley (Jigger) rides to the public. This is how the club does its major fundraising.
